Vernon Building Society has appointed experienced financial services executive Anthony Murphy as an Independent Non-Executive Director, strengthening its Board as the Society continues to deliver its growth strategy. Anthony joined the Vernon Board in September 2026 and will become Chair of the Audit Committee from January 2027 (subject to regulatory approval).

Anthony brings more than 25 years’ experience across the financial services sector, having held senior strategy roles at Lloyds Banking Group, United Arab Bank and Tandem Bank. Most recently, he was Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director at Nottingham Building Society from March 2023 to May 2026, where he played a key role in the Society’s strategic transformation. This included supporting profitable growth, establishing its partnership with Gen H and launching its inaugural public Residential Mortgage-Backed Securitisation programme.

A Chartered Management Accountant, Anthony also brings significant Board and governance experience. He is currently Chair of the University of Nottingham’s Audit and Risk Committee and has previously served on the Board of Bournemouth University.

Darren Ditchburn, CEO at Vernon Building Society said: “Anthony is a fantastic addition to the Board, and he joins at a crucial time for the Society. We have ambitious plans to grow, both digitally and physically, while continuing to enhance our savings and mortgage propositions and strengthen the support we provide to our members and broker partners.

“It’s important that we have the right experience and expertise on the Board to help manage that growth responsibly and make the most of the opportunities ahead. Anthony’s experience across banking, fintech and the mutual sector will bring valuable insight as we continue to modernise while staying true to what makes the Vernon different.”

Anthony Murphy said: “I’m delighted to have joined Vernon as an Independent Non-Executive Director. Having worked across different parts of financial services, my experience in the mutual sector has been one of the most interesting and enjoyable parts of my career.

“I’m particularly attracted to the Society’s mutual purpose and its role in helping people on their home ownership journey, while providing a safe and secure place for people to save. I’m looking forward to contributing to that purpose and helping to ensure we continue to deliver positive outcomes for our members, colleagues and communities.”

Anthony succeeds Jenny Quirke, who will step down from the Board at the end of 2026 after reaching the maximum nine-year term of service.

Darren said: “Jenny has made an outstanding contribution to the Society over the last nine years. Her experience, leadership and support have helped guide and challenge the executive team, ensuring we continue to make the right decisions for our members and remain focused on delivering our long-term strategy.

“On behalf of colleagues, members and fellow directors, I’d like to thank Jenny for her commitment, insight and contribution to the Vernon, and wish her every success for the future.”
